  • 1710: Establishment of quarantine facilities for plague victims just outside Berlin’s city limits
  • 1727: Expansion to a military hospital with educational training centre. Friedrich Wilhelm I. names the new building “Charité”
  • 1785 – 1797: New construction on Charité
  • 1810: Establishment of the Berlin University with medical faculty
  • 1818: Conversion of a former colour factory to the University Clinic (Universitätsklinikum) Ziegelstraße
  • 1896 – 1917: New construction of Charité with red brick
  • 1906: Opening of the Rudolf Virchow Hospital
  • 1933 – 1945: Expulsion of Jewish researchers; destruction due to war damages
  • 1945 onward: Reconstruction of Charité
  • 1946 – 1989: Charité serves as the most prestigious institute of the GDR
  • 1968: Hospital “Klinkum Steglitz” opens (1994). It was later renamed “Universitatsklinikum Benjamin Franklin.”
  • 1997/1998: The “Universitatsklinikum Charité, Medizinische Fakultät der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin” was created when the medical school of the Humboldt Universitat and the Virchow-Klinikum of the Freie Universitat merged.
  • 2003:As a result of the merger between Charité and the “Universitatsklinikum Benjamin Franklin” of the Freie Universitat, the “Charité – Universitatsmedizin Berlin” is now a member corporation of both universities and one of the biggest clinics in Europe.
  • 2013: The Berlin Institute of Health (BIH) was set up with the goal of making it easier for research results to be put into practice.
  • 2015: The Berlin Institute of Health becomes its own legal entity, and Charité and the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine join it as legal entities.
  • 2016: Ceremony to mark the official handover of the main ward building (Bettenhaus) on Campus Charité Mitte. Since it first opened in 1982, the building has been through a long list of renovations and repairs.
  • Opening of Charité Emergency Medicine Center/Charité Notfallzentrum Mitte – Rudolf-Nissen-Haus, which has 15 cutting-edge operating rooms, intensive care services, and Charité’s new Main Emergency Department.
  • 2019: Official signing of the administrative deal that makes the Berlin Institute of Health (BIH) the third pillar of Charité (along with the Medical Faculty and the University Hospital).
  • 2021: As of January 1, the Berlin Institute of Health at Charité (BIH) will be the third pillar of Charité, along with the University Hospital and the Medical Faculty. It will do translational research. The Helmholtz Association’s Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) becomes a Privileged Partner of the BIH.
  • 2022: The German Heart Center of the Charité (DHZC) was getting ready to move its operations.
  • 2023: As of January 1, the cardiac medical services of Charité and the German Heart Center Berlin (DHZB) are united in the Deutsches Herzzentrum der Charité (DHZC).
