Scroll DownIn order to provide specialist care for the most difficult medical diseases, the San Raffaele Hospital was established in 1971 as a research hospital and university polyclinic. It was previously recognized in 1972 as a Scientific Hospitalization and Care Institute (IRCCS) for diabetes.
When the Biotechnology Department (DiBiT) was established in 1991, basic research got underway. The Vita-Salute San Raffaele University was established in 1996. The IRCCS qualification was expanded to include the entire field of molecular medicine in 2001 as a result of the growth of the research sector, which now comprises over 150 laboratories.
The San Raffaele joined the San Donato Group (GSD), Italy’s biggest private hospital network, in 2012.
